| Hurricane Katrina
From the cries of their pain, from the calls of their need, from the prayers that they shared, K.I.D.S. responded.
In less than three weeks following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, K.I.D.S. distributed over $12 million worth of product to displaced, dismayed and dysfunctional families by drawing on 20 years of relationships with caring donors and 10 years of associations with local agencies on the Gulf Coast.
From socks to towels, from toys to dress suits, from books to furniture, the children's, women's, men's and home furnishings industries united through K.I.D.S. and Fashion Delivers to donate and deliver. Families living on the floor of the Houston Astrodome, mothers carrying children to church locations, fathers fleeing to other states for shelter, children clutching onto hope received new items to make them feel whole, in body and spirit.
A major product donation effort was spearheaded with Kohl’s Department Stores. Over 80 tractor-trailer trucks were filled with donations from customers and directed to K.I.D.S.-approved agencies in Louisiana, Texas, Atlanta, Alabama and Mississippi.
Scholastic Inc. changed the focus of its annual book drive and donated to K.I.D.S. books for children and families in the Gulf States. Toys"R"Us/Babies"R"Us donated 17 pallets of baby and children's clothing. |
