Fostering Literacy

The K.I.D.S. Literacy Program provides new, clean, age-appropriate books to children in need who have low reading levels and need encouragement to foster a love of reading and improve their literacy skills. The chance for low-income children to succeed through reading lies at the heart of the K.I.D.S. mission and the future of our next generation.

Through K.I.D.S., children receive their own new books to motivate them to read, improve their literacy skills and build a bridge between school, after-school and home reading. Scholastic Inc. provides large donations of books to K.I.D.S. for distribution to children in depressed and under-served areas.

One such donation, to Native American children in Nevada, was arranged with the assistance of U.S. Representative Shelley Berkley of Las Vegas.  Congresswoman Berkley was on hand when thousands of books from Scholastic were donated to the Las Vegas Pauite Tribe.

Las Vegas Pauite Chairman Alfred Mitre said, "These books will assist our native youth in building a stronger foundation for academic success." Congresswoman Berkley added, "I cannot begin to describe the excitement on the faces of these young readers as they selected their own brand new books to take home. Reading skills are not only critical to learning, they also unlock the doors to imagination and, through this generous donation by K.I.D.S. and Scholastic, these tribal students now have thousands of books that both teach and entertain."

Children who have their own books develop better reading skills and perform better in school. K.I.D.S. provides books to agencies serving disadvantaged families so that children in need will have a better chance to succeed in life.
